Policy and Global Alignment Framework

Building dignity, equality, and opportunity for widows, orphans, and the needy. At Widows Mite, we believe real empowerment happens when compassion meets structure — when human rights, development policy, and social justice work hand in hand.

Our mission aligns with major United Nations, African Union, and Ghanaian national frameworks that prioritize inclusion, protection, and empowerment of the vulnerable.

Together, they form the backbone of our vision for a world - and a Ghana - where no widow, orphan, or needy person is left behind.

🌐 GLOBAL FRAMEWORKS

⚖️ 1. Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)

Adopted by the United Nations in 1979, CEDAW is the international bill of rights for women. It commits all signatory nations, including Ghana, to end discrimination and guarantee women’s equality in every sphere of life.

Widomight’s Alignment:

Protecting widows’ rights to inheritance, dignity, and property.
Advocating against harmful widowhood practices and stigma.
Ensuring equal access to education, healthcare, and opportunities for women and girls.
Promoting women’s participation in leadership and decision-making.

At Widomight, empowering widows is not charity — it’s human rights work.

💸 2. The Global Social Protection Agenda

Led by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the World Bank, this agenda seeks to guarantee universal access to social protection — ensuring that no one falls into extreme poverty or neglect.

Widomight’s Alignment:

Supporting widows and vulnerable families with livelihood training and entrepreneurship programs.
Linking beneficiaries to national safety nets like LEAP and NHIS.
Strengthening community-based support systems that build long-term resilience.

For Widomight, social protection means more than aid — it means security, dignity, and opportunity.

🌎 3. The “Leave No One Behind” Framework

This is the guiding principle of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It demands that progress reach every person, especially those most marginalized by poverty, gender, or circumstance.

Widomight’s Alignment:

Centering widows, orphans, and the poor in all our programs and advocacy.
Fighting for inclusion, equality, and justice in policy and practice.
Ensuring that every Widomight initiative uplifts those society too often overlooks.

At Widomight, no one is invisible — everyone matters.

🌍 CONTINENTAL FRAMEWORKS (AFRICA)

🌺 4. The Maputo Protocol

(Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa)
Adopted by the African Union in 2003, the Maputo Protocol is one of Africa’s most powerful instruments for protecting women’s rights. It explicitly addresses the rights of widows, women’s access to inheritance, and freedom from harmful cultural practices.

Widomight’s Alignment:

Advocating for the dignity, safety, and rights of widows.
Promoting awareness of women’s legal rights and protection under African law.
Supporting the elimination of cultural practices that oppress or marginalize women.

👩🏾‍🤝‍👩🏽 5. The African Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Strategy (GEWE 2020–2030)

This African Union strategy provides a clear roadmap for gender equality across the continent. It focuses on economic empowerment, education, leadership, and social protection for women.

Widomight’s Alignment:

Empowering widows through entrepreneurship, training, and access to finance.
Supporting women to become leaders in community transformation.
Advocating for systemic gender equality and inclusive policy design.

👶🏾 6. The African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC)

This charter, adopted by the African Union in 1990, is Africa’s own legal framework for child rights — ensuring every child’s survival, development, and protection within their cultural context.

Widomight’s Alignment:

Providing education support, mentorship, and welfare for orphans and vulnerable children.
Promoting family and community-based care systems over institutionalization.
Partnering with schools and welfare agencies to ensure children’s safety and rights.

🕊️ 7. African Union Agenda 2063 — The Africa We Want

Agenda 2063 envisions a peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous Africa driven by its own citizens. Widomight’s mission connects directly to several of its key aspirations:

Widomight’s Alignment:

Aspiration 1: Promoting inclusive economic growth by empowering widows and poor families.
Aspiration 3: Advocating justice, human rights, and protection for widows and orphans.
Aspiration 6: Elevating women and youth as engines of Africa’s transformation.
Aspiration 7: Building a united and resilient Africa through compassion and equality.

Widomight stands for “The Africa We Want” — just, inclusive, and compassionate.

🇬🇭 NATIONAL FRAMEWORKS (GHANA)

🇬🇭 8. Ghana’s National Development Priorities

Guided by the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MOGCSP), Ghana identifies widows, orphans, and the needy as part of the nation’s “vulnerable and excluded groups.”

Widomight’s Alignment:

Supporting national social protection programs through livelihood and skills development.
Empowering widows to become financially independent and socially included.
Ensuring orphans and needy children have access to education, care, and health services.

Widomight works as a grassroots partner to Ghana’s development vision — helping translate national policy into real change for real people.
